Udaan is a government of India initiative. It was started with an aim to provide educational support to the female students who want to peruse engineering after clearing XIIth standard. In India, many girls stop their higher education due to family conditions.  Especially, the female member of the low-income group does not pursue higher education. The reason behind are:

1. Insufficient resources to continue higher education.
2. Family ethos that further education is not so important for a girl child.
3. In comparison to a male child, family members put less effort in funding female education.

Thus, the girl child has to suppress her desire for higher studies.  To help the girl child come out of such situations, the government of India introduced a pilot project of Udaan.  This initiative helps Girl students to prepare for all India level engineering entrance exams.

Salient features of the project:

1. Improves the standard of teaching and learning of science and mathematics at higher secondary level.
2. Provides free online education materials to the 11th and 12th class girl students for the preparation of engineering.
3. Boosts enrollment ratio of girl students for higher education.

Udaan focuses on improving the quality of education for the girl students. Special support and incentives are provided to the selected underprivileged girls every year.

Study materials for selected girls are provided with the help of BITS Pilani, IIT Delhi and CBSE Schools.

Last year, 1000 girls were selected out of 14,575 applications received for admission in IIT. Chairman of CBSE Mr Vineet Joshi, HRD Minister Smriti Irani and principals of various schools were present on the occasion of the selection.
