Maths or Science! Which is important? This debate has been going on for ages now; with each of the teams taking the side of either of the subjects arguing that theirs is better than the other. In this article, we will not be taking any side. Instead, we will discuss the importance of the two in detail in our daily lives.
Mathematics is the science that deals with shapes, arrangement, and quantity. Math encompasses in all sphere of our lives, right from cooking, Banks, Our Home ( architecture ), In every artwork we come across, Handling money, engineering, and even in all types of sports, we watch on television.
Since the inception of documented past, the mathematical invention has been at the cutting-edge of every liberal culture, and in use, even in the most primitive of cultures. The needs of math arose based on the wants of society. The more complex society, the more complex the mathematical needs. Primeval tribes needed little more than the ability to count but also relied on math to calculate the position of the sun and the physics of hunting.
Science is equally important because it influences numerous aspects of everyday life, including food, energy, medicine, transportation, leisure activities and more. Science improves human life at every level, from individual comfort to global issues. Almost everything that we see around us is the gift of science and technology. Be it a fan, smart-phones, wheels of vehicles, cloth, paper, vehicles, electricity, toothbrush, vehicles, microwave, Washing Machine, Dishwasher, Mixer and Grinder, radio, television, laptops, etc.; everything is the result of science and technology.
Now let us peep into the impact that each of this knowledge stream has in our everyday life.
Importance of Mathematics
Mathematics is a systematic employment of material as It makes a man systematic or orderly. Math brings orderliness in our life, which avoids confusions. Certain qualities that are nurtured by mathematics are the creativity, power of reasoning, critical thinking, problem-solving ability and even affects communication skills.
Mathematics is the cradle of all creations, without which the world cannot budge. Be it a cook or a farmer, a mechanic or a carpenter, a doctor or a shopkeeper, a scientist or an engineer, a magician or a Musician; everyone needs mathematics in their day-to-day life. Even insects use math in their everyday life for existence.
Snails make their shells, spiders design their webs, and bees build hexagonal combs. There are countless examples of mathematical patterns in nature’s fabric. Anyone can be a mathematician if one is given proper guidance and training in the formative period of one’s life. Let us view the various uses of Math in our life:
Use of Math in our kitchen
We usually measure the ingredients in their respective quantity, before cooking any dish. Thus, making use of math. In fact, the use of the dishwasher, Microwave and the stove, the adjustment of its flame involves to some degree the concept of math.
Banking is plausibly a place where math finds maximum utilization than anywhere else. Heading off to a bank implies that you need appropriate records of the account number, cash that you need to deposit, withdraw, etc. without a basic proficiency in math, no one can do anything in a bank.
Arts – Painting, Dance and Singing/Instrument
Math is an inseparable aspect of making a painting or sculpture. Designing a collage, dance performances, Singing/Playing any musical instruments (according to beats) all involve maths.
Gardening/ mowing the lawn
In gardening, one needs to know the number of holes that need to be dug. The right number of seeds that have to in each slot, How much water must be provided to various plants, how long it would take the plant to grow, how much land needs to be mowed, all involve measurement in it.
Travel – Car/Train/Flight
Whether you are planning to travel by car or train or flight, all involve mathematical calculations. If by car, you surely need to know the distance you have to travel as well as the estimated liters of fuel that you need to fill. If your travel is by flight, you need knowledge of Arrival/ Departure time of your flights. People traveling by train, need to be aware of the distance remaining to the destination as well as Arrival/departure timings of trains.
Application of Math in shopping is quite high, where we make a list of required things that have to be purchased. We have a budget limit and design our purchase according to the money allocated.
Importance of Science
Science has conquered all the facets of modern lifestyle. From the Alarm clock that wakes you up every day, to the night lamp you switch on before going to sleep – are all the babies of Science. No individual can go without feeling the effect of science in his/her life. Not just the Tube light or the ceiling fan, the TV or the cinema that displays the power of science in our existence, but all the things are done to us or that we do is in some way or another is connected with science. Let’s see how science touches our everyday lives:
Vehicles: The many vehicles we use to commute to our place of work is the gift from science to us.Fuel the cars need is also an invention of a scientist.
Medicines: Science has increased the life expectancy of the human race by inventing drugs for many diseases, that were conceived to be incurable in the past. Not only that organ transplantation, Blood transfusion, eye donation, but plastic surgery are also all the result of hard work of many scientists. These techniques and inventions have changed so many lives for the better.
Electricity/Fans/Air-Condition/Lights – Can you imagine a day without Fan or light or electricity? It has become an integral part of one’s lives. We are so conditioned that, one day without power will completely turn our lives into a mess. The world around us will come to a standstill. Such is the impact of electricity on us.
Food – Whether be it an innovative hybrid variety of plant, New machines in agriculture or inventing of devices that make cooking more accessible and tasty, Science is an integral part of the food industry.
Television/Mobile Phones/Camera/Projector/I-pad need no special explanation as our kids are better versed in using these gadgets than us.
After going through the various uses of science and Math in our lives every day, we can authoritatively conclude that both Math and Science are vital for a smooth and comfortable existence of humanity.
